Additional Details

This autograph book was kept by Clara Hirsh (1845-1922) of Richmond, VA, daughter of dry goods merchant Abram Hirsh. This volume was a gift from her brother Herman Hirsh, who was one of the earlier signers in August 1860. He later served with the Richmond Grays and the 1st Virginia Cavalry in the Confederate Army, and was killed on 17 July 1863; a dedication to him appears on the flyleaf. The inscriptions were mostly made in Richmond, though a few were done during a late 1860 trip to New York. None of the inscriptions directly address the war, but they document many figures from Virginia's wartime Jewish community. After the war, Clara married stationer Isaac Guggenheimer and raised a large family in Baltimore.
