Additional Details

Aaron Lopez (1731-1782) of Newport, RI was one of the most successful merchants in colonial America, and a leading member of Newport's thriving Jewish community. He remains a controversial figure because of his substantial involvement in the slave trade. This account was drawn up in the very early part of Lopez's career, just four years after his emigration from Portugal to Newport. His trading partner here, Hayman Levy (1721-1789) was an important fur trader and key figure in the early Jewish history of both New York and Philadelphia. Swann recently sold a 1764 Lopez receipt with the claim "No earlier Lopez documents have been traced on the auction market" (17 September 2015, lot 1789). This one is eight years earlier.
