Additional Details

In 1896, Solomon Shlyomsky published an unflattering centuries-old biography of Jesus Christ, titled "Toldot Yeshu. Sefer Mayse Talui." It was intended as an antidote to the Christian missionaries who had been proselytizing the New York Jewish community (see Goldman 1066). The pamphlet ran afoul of Anthony Comstock, the infamous United States Postal Inspector who dedicated his life to censoring obscene and blasphemous material in the mails. When Comstock had the entire print run confiscated, Shlyomsky successfully sued. These are the trial proceedings. Goldman 1069 (variant title as described); Singerman 4911.
