Additional Details

Adolph J. Lichtstern (1862-1928) was a Chicago broker. Each leaf of this lovely guest album has a unique hand-illuminated border by Susan S. Frackelton, in addition to an ornately illuminated title page; she was renowned for her paintings on ceramics. Many notable opera singers inscribed the book to Adolph or his wife Miriam, including Vanni Marcoux of France, Charles Hackett and Marcia Van Dresser of America, Lina Cavalieri of Italy, Conchita Supervia of Spain, and Florence Easton of England. Others included composer Attilio Parelli (who left 8 bars of music), meatpacking magnate Ogden Armour, and conductor Cleofonte Campanini. Several inscriptions relate to the Lichtsterns' Judaism, including those from Rabbis Stephen S. Wise and Jacob X. Cohen of New York.
