Most of these postcards were addressed to Clara Richman (born 1884) of Brooklyn, NY, a nurse in a settlement house. Census records show that she lived with her father Barnett Richman (a sewing machine agent) and family, all of them Russian-born Yiddish speakers. 31 of the postcards were from her sweetheart, Socialist labor leader Baruch Charney (1886-1938), who often used the surname Vladeck. He toured the country as a lecturer. They married in August 1911; a few of the later cards are addressed to her as Mrs. B. Charney. One postcard is from Clara to her husband, showing the life of a labor wife: "I am surprised you write so little, I supose you have no time to spare. When are you coming home?" A housing development and park in Manhattan are still named after Vladeck.
