Additional Details

Fifth Edition. The use of the standard printer's cut depicting a runaway slave and the use of the large "N" for Negro in the alphabet, speaks volumes to the attitude toward Blacks and what was being taught to the South's children. The use of wallpaper for the wrappers was caused by severe paper shortages, especially in the blockaded city of Mobile. But the publisher was not terribly dismayed since the shortage "is in itself a safeguard against fruitless competition in the publishing business." Parrish and Willingham 7684; Crandall 4040.
