Additional Details

Native Pennsylvanian Daniel G. Kenney (1806-1848) enlisted in the Army in 1841, but was weakened by chronic bronchitis. By the time of this letter seven years later, he and his wife had removed to Fort Scott on the western frontier, where he was able to do some light clerical duty as an ordnance sergeant. This letter describes his harrowing journey and gives a pleasant picture of the landscape at Fort Scott. His army enlistment shows that he died there two months later.
