Additional Details

This ticker begins with an interruption to the financial news of the day: "President Kennedy shot. Dallas AP. President Kennedy was shot to day just as his motorcade left downtown Dallas. Mrs Kennedy jumped up and grabbed Mr Kennedy. She cried oh no. The motorcade sped. AP photographer James W Altgens said he heard two shots but thought someone was shooting fireworks until he saw the blood on the president." Most of the following sheets are devoted to the awful news as it developed. The first report of the president's death is on the fifth page: "Two priests who were with Kennedy say he is dead of bullet wounds." The manhunt for the killer culminates on the penultimate page with the capture of "a 24-year-old man Lee H Oswald." The ticker closes at 4:59 p.m. with the end of the business day.
This broad ticker tape (wider than the better-known stock ticker tape that rained down on parades for many years) was produced at the New York brokerage firm Hornblower & Weeks, where the consignor was employed on the day of the assassination.
