In this telegram, Democratic Party heavyweights begin the planning for Kennedy's famous 45th birthday celebration, which took place at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan two months later--a celebration often remembered for Marilyn Monroe's sultry performance of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President." The committee to plan this event was led by Arthur B. Krim (1910-1994), a prominent film executive who later served as an advisor to Lyndon B. Johnson; and Anna Marie Rosenberg (1902-1983), who had served as Assistant Secretary of Defense under Truman. Here, they write to a Queens nightclub owner: "President Kennedy is going to celebrate his birthday with his friends in New York on Saturday evening, May 19th. [Mayor] Bob Wagner and we want to invite you to meet with his personal representatives to help work out plans for that night. Will you come for cocktails?"
