Jackson, president of the 5 million member National Baptist Convention, opposed Dr. King's popular civil rights program. In 1960, Gardner Taylor was elected to the presidency on a roll-call vote, but Jackson refused to step down. As a consequence, Taylor, King, and others, withdrew and formed the Progressive National Baptist Convention.
