Additional Details

The lot includes a box of 28 slides from the 26 June 1966 closing rally at the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson which concluded James Meredith's March Against Fear. At least 8 of the slides show Dr. King speaking at a makeshift podium. In many of them, James Meredith (still recovering from the gunshot wounds which felled him earlier in the march) can be seen seated to the left of the podium, wearing a white hat. Stokely Carmichael, wearing his trademark denim overalls, can be seen at the podium in one slide, and appears in another seated to the right of the podium. Several other shots show people in attendance at the rally; one woman wears a "Meredith Mississippi March for Freedom June 1966" button. We know of no other color photographs from this rally.
Another box of 43 slides consists mostly of images of the Memphis commemoration on 4 April 1969, the first anniversary of King's assassination. Senator Ted Kennedy is seen in several of the slides as a speaker. Some of these slides also appear to show the demonstrations in Memphis on the day following the assassination on 5 April 1968.
Another 26 slides cannot be identified, though they appear to be from the same period. They show a building on fire at night, a campus demonstration, and more. One shows a Memphis taxi cab bearing a sign from the anti-Civil Rights group "Citizens for Good Government" circa 1966. The photographer of these remarkable slides is unknown, but would appear to be a professional or accomplished amateur based in Memphis. Additional images are available upon request.
