(KING, MARTIN LUTHER.) Freedom Day . . . Come March with Dr. King! Printed flier, 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches; toning, minor foxing. [Selma, AL], 22 February [1965]

Additional Details

The Freedom Day voter registration efforts were among the events leading up to the famed March from Selma to Montgomery. In the first Freedom Day on 18 January 1965, Martin Luther King and John Lewis led 500 prospective voters to the Selma courthouse for registration, but were turned away. This flier was issued on 22 February to advertise the event planned for the following Monday, 1 March. It is illustrated with a shackled hand grasping for the key to freedom--"The Vote." In this second march, the prospective voters led by King and Lewis were allowed to sign an "appearance book" to indicate their attempt to register, and were asked to return later to complete their registrations. The next week was "Bloody Sunday," followed by the 17 March to Montgomery.
