Additional Details

These photographs depict an unspecified fundraising event. At least 25 of them show Martin Luther King, Jr.; other identifiable figures include Sammy Davis, Jr. and his wife May Britt; the singer Odetta; Mahalia Jackson; Dick Gregory; and California governor Edmund "Pat" Brown. We've found one other photograph from this event (Britt stands next to Dr. King and wears the same dress) in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference newsletter of February 1964, describing it as a Western Christian Leadership Conference event from the summer of 1963 where Davis pledged $20,000 to King. That event, a "Rally for Freedom," took place at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles on 26 May 1963; Dick Gregory also appeared at the event. A man in one image can be seen holding a program titled "Western Christian Leadership Conference," and one is captioned on verso "Freedom Rally."
