Additional Details

In 1935, the editorial employees of the New York's Amsterdam News joined the Newspaper Guild of New York and went on strike to gain union recognition--one of the few examples in American history of a strike by Black workers against Black management. This bulletin demands the reinstatement of 15 fired union leaders, and urges a boycott of the newspaper and its advertisers. The strike ended two months later with a strong union contract, making it the first unionized Black newspaper in the country.
