Additional Details

First edition, before the addition of the 120-page Discurso Preliminar.

The 1812 Constitution of Cádiz was Spain's first constitution, and widely regarded as a very liberal document for its time. It was drafted with representation from Spain's overseas colonies; Mexico and South America are well represented among the deputies listed on pages 125-134. Ferdinand VII returned to the throne in 1814 and soon abolished the constitution, but it remained influential in the Spanish colonies and beyond. Palau 59673.

Provenance: Lieutenant General Thomas Maitland (1760-1824), who commanded an expeditionary force of 8,000 British troops in Spain in the Peninsular War of 1812; Athenaeum Library inscription dated 1836 and their later 19th century binding.
