Additional Details

Raymond Pace Alexander (1897-1974), civil rights lawyer and judge, was the son of slaves, emancipated by the 13th amendment. His wife, Sadie Tanner Mossell (1898-1989) was the first black woman in America to earn a PhD. The Alexanders were a part of Philadelphia's "black aristocracy." This series of photos shows the couple entertaining at their home. Probably taken for a magazine article.
