Additional Details

The National Bar Association was founded in 1925 as a network for Black attorneys and judges. The tall young man in the front row wearing the light suit is Raymond Pace Alexander, two years before he led the fight to desegregate the schools in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. Though only 32, he was at that time the organization's president. Next to him is his wife Sadie Mossell Alexander, the first Black woman to practice law in Pennsylvania; she later served as the secretary of the National Bar Association. The photograph was made by Addison Scurlock, Washington's leading Black photographer; the conference was held at Howard University.
