Macon B. Allen (1816-1894), the first licensed African-American lawyer in America was admitted to the bar in Maine in 1844. Allen opened his first practice in Boston in 1845, and became the first African-American attorney recognized by the Massachusetts bar. Following radical Reconstruction, Allen moved to Charleston, S.C. There he became a partner in the firm of William Whipper.
