Additional Details

first edition of the Vocabulario; a smaller edition of the Gramatica had appeared in Spain in 1603. González Holguín had been studying the Quechua language since his arrival in Peru as a missionary in 1581. The Vocabulario was one of the largest works published in South America in this period, divided into a Quechua-Spanish and Spanish-Quechua dictionaries of 375 and 332 pages respectively. It is bound with the earlier Gramatica. Palau says they were sometimes bound together, but we know of no other copy offered thus at auction. The printer, del Canto, was the second in all of South America after Antonio Ricardo. Medina, Lima 42, 38; Palau 105385-6; Sabin 32493, 32495. One copy of the Gramatica known at auction since 1971.
