Additional Details

William Osborne Bartlett (1820-1881) was a prosperous New York lawyer who had known Lincoln personally. We wonder why someone would have stolen the Lincoln mourning cloth from Bartlett's Long Island summer estate, and why Bartlett was exercised to post such an extravagant reward for the thief's capture. On the verso is sketched the seating diagram from the trial of the Lincoln assassination conspirators. No other copies of this curious broadside are known.
