Additional Details

This playbill dates from Booth's first visit to Boston, just as his theatrical career was reaching its peak. He made his debut on May 12 at the Boston Museum, then the preeminent theater in the city. This playbill promises that "J. Wilkes Booth . . . will repeat his performance of Richard III, received on Monday evening last with prolonged and enthusiastic plaudits from the largest audience ever assembled within the walls of the museum!" Less than three years later, he assassinated Abraham Lincoln.
