"AWFUL EVENT. PRESIDENT LINCOLN SHOT BY AN ASSASSIN." (LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) First report of the assassination in the New-York Times. 8 pages, 21 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches, on one unopened sheet, unbound; folds, minimal foxing and edge wear. New York, 15 April 1865

Additional Details

The first two-plus columns of this early (first?) edition are given over to four dispatches from Washington extending through 12:30 a.m. The last announces prematurely that "the President is reported dead"; he actually hung on until 7:22 that morning. Later editions added a sub-headline "No Hope Entertained of Recovery," with dispatches extending later into the morning.
