Additional Details

The first of these newspapers is an early pre-evening edition (apparently lacking the second leaf), which includes black borders throughout, promises "Latest from Washington, eleven o'clock, a.m." and has the front-page headline "Extra. Startling News. President Lincoln and Sec. Seward Assassinated." It is heavily annotated with 16 corrections in pencil, apparently by the editor. This is followed by the regular 15 April evening edition (complete with 4 pages), with the same assassination news, but reflecting the earlier pencil corrections and moved to the second page. Both issues offer, by coincidence or design, a new front-page advertisement for mourning goods. with--12 other issues of the New Haven Daily or Weekly Palladium, April to early May 1865, most notably the 10 April issue covering Lee's surrender.
