"AWFUL EVENT. PRESIDENT LINCOLN SHOT BY AN ASSASSIN." (LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) Very early edition of the New York Times with assassination coverage. 8 pages, 21 1/2 x 15 1/4 inches, on one unopened sheet, unbound; folds, minor foxing, minimal wear. New York, 15 April 1865

Additional Details

The first two-plus columns of this early edition are given over to dispatches from Washington extending through 12:30 a.m. A midnight report notes that "the President is reported dead," but a 12:30 a.m. "second dispatch" equivocates that "the President was shot in a theatre tonight, and is, perhaps, mortally wounded" (he actually expired at 7:22). The identity of the assassins had not yet been determined, "though every body supposes them to have been rebels."
