Additional Details

Most of the photographs show Hughes in a short-sleeved shirt in his office, some of them working at a typewriter. A copy of his 1962 book Fight for Freedom can be seen on the desk. In 4 of the images, Hughes can be seen proudly displaying a poster for a 1962 Italian performance of his Black Nativity. In the final 10 images, Hughes has donned a jacket and tie, and moved to a different room.
The photographs were taken by the noted African-American photographer Louis H. Draper (1935-2002), who has been the subject of increased interest in recent years. One of these images (second column, fifth down) was used to illustrate a New York Times story on Draper, 5 August 2013.
