Additional Details

First edition of the first novel by Nella Larsen (1891-1964), an important Harlem Renaissance author. Born in Chicago to an Afro-Caribbean immigrant father and a Danish mother, and raised in part by a Danish step-father, the complexities of biracial identity were central to her work. W. E. B. Du Bois described Quicksand as "a fine, thoughtful, and courageous piece of work . . . the best piece of fiction that Negro America has produced since the heyday of Chesnutt" (The Crisis, June 1928, page 202). Her second and final novel, Passing, was adapted as a film in 2021. Margolies 372; Whiteman, page 33.
