Additional Details

Dorothy Porter-Wesley (1905-1995), librarian, archivist, bibliographer, and historian, was Howard University''s Librarian for nearly 40 years. During this time she produced several books and innumerable articles and essays. One of her most important works is North American Negro Poets, 1760-1944. The files offered here represent research that Porter was doing toward a bibliography of Cuban and other Afro-Caribbean poets. Among the poets represented are Nicolas Guillen, Placido (Gabriel de la Concepcion Valdes), and Juan Manzano. One large folder titled "Bibliografia de Autores de la Raza de Color, de Cuba, en la Epoca de la Esclavitud," (55 pages typed and in manuscript) contains lists of writers and their works. Part of this is in English and sub-titled "Cuban Writers of Negro Ancestry." An excellent working base for a future researcher.
