Additional Details

William Carl Bolivar (1849-1941), bibliophile, journalist and race historian, amassed a large library of material relative to the history of people of African descent. He used his library as a source for numerous articles on that history which appeared in the pages of the Philadelphia Tribune. The first piece offered here was assembled by Nellie Bright and other friends of Bolivar as a 65th birthday tribute. Sadly, he died not long afterward. The second piece is a eulogy and personal reminiscence by his friend and minister, Henry L. Phillips. For more on Bolivar and other "Black Bibliophiles," see Elinor Des Verney Sinette''s book by that title (Howard University Press, 1990).
