Additional Details

The first title is inscribed "Vandi Haygood, 9/20/44." Vandi Haygood, a white woman, was involved in a strange and violent relationship with Chester Himes. One particular incident led to Himes piece 'A Case of Rape' (Un cas de Viol). Beneath this, and above Henry Lee Moon's bookplate is 'with love to Henry, 12/21/44. Quite likely an instance of Haygood having carried the book to Moon, after getting Himes to inscribe it for him. The White book is inscribed by White's wife Poppy, 'To Walter's Right Hand, Henry Moon, Poppy.' Henry Lee Moon worked closely with Walter White at Crisis Magazine and in planning at the NAACP. Himes was Moon's first cousin. All four books carry fine associations.
