James Welson and Rosamund Johnson were the team that created what is generally acknowledged to be the African American anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Carl Van Vechten was a wealthy white photographer and author who attached himself to the artists and literati of the so-called Harlem Renaissance. His catalogue includes photographs of just about everyone of note from the period.
