first edition, with a long inscription from the poet on the title-page: "To Magdalene and Erold, with sincere best wishes & memory of the most glorious indoor picnic I have ever attended, Ferdie, Dec. 11, 1949." Levy was a West Indian medical student at the time, attending Trinity College in Dublin. He was a friend of Langston Hughes and wrote about Harlem. Levy was associated with "the Gumby Book Studio Group, a young clique of enthusiasts who were determined to play their part in helping to break the traditional inferior status of the Negro in American literature."
