Additional Details

first edition, heavily annotated by porter for a second revised edition which was never published. Groundbreaking "North American Negro Poets" was the first attempt at a checklist of black poets. First published by the noted book dealer Charles Heartman in 1945, Mrs. Porter probably started to work on a revised edition in the late 1960s or early 1970s. However, book-dealer and bibliographer, William French (University Place Books) had been working on a bibliography of black poetry and drama and contacted Mrs. Porter for her advice. Mrs Porter thus abandoned her project. William French''s Afro-American Poetry and Drama appeared in 1976. See lot # 271.
