THE BRINLEY COPY (LITERATURE AND POETRY.) WHEATLEY, PHILLIS. Poems on Various Subjects Religious and Moral, by Phillis Wheatley, Negro Servant to Mr. John Wheatley of Boston, in New England. Frontispiece portrait by Scipio Morehead in first state. 8vo, later full polished brown calf, retaining the original morocco spine label; armorial bookplate of Daniel P. Griswold, small circular ticket from the Library of George W. Brinley and larger one from Henry Weston Sackett and a tiny bookseller's ticket on the front paste-down. London: For A. Bell, 1773
first edition of the first book of poetry written by an african american. A very handsome copy with solid early provenance. The tiny ticket marked "Brinley 6985" indicates that this volume was once in the library of one of the nineteenth century's premiere American book collectors. George Brinley amassed what was considered to be a library of Americana without rival.
