Additional Details

a very rare children's publication. The publisher's announcement in the first issue states: "We commence this month the publication of an edition of the Child at Home with colored engravings. The heading and large cut of the first page are printed in from six to eight brilliant colors, making a paper having no equal in America for beauty and attractiveness."
Many of the color illustrations deal with the Civil War and end of slavery. There are numerous articles relating to African Americans, including one on Phillis Wheatley with a portrait of her drawn from the frontispiece of the 1834 Boston edition of her poems. Other illustrations and articles include: an African-American soldier in uniform, greeting his family; soldiers accompanying colored children "On the Way to School"; and a magnificent half-page color engraving "No More Slaves in America." We could find only one reference to The Child at Home, and that is on the online-reference "American Children's Periodicals 1789-1872," showing the color masthead of an 1870 issue. Other than that, we could locate no copies in any of the standard references, and no copies at auction in the last twenty-five years.
