After his successes with Ebony and Jet, John H. Johnson, 33 years old, tried his hand at the "True Confession" type of magazine that seemed to do so well with white readers. Unfortunately, the very tawdry nature of the material put off the sexually more conservative female black readers at whom it was aimed. Tan Confessions lasted barely two years, before Johnson changed the name (and content) to Tan.
