(LOCOMOTIVE ENGINES)
Album entitled Locomotives of Early Design with 67 photographs of museum dioramas displaying concept and production railroad engines.
With examples from 220 BC to the year 1904, the images show all manner of experimental and successful locomotive contraptions, the earliest being the Egyptian Ox-Cart of Ptolemy, and more recently, 19th-century Baltimore and Ohio Railroad engines, alongside inventions by Peter Cooper and Phineas Davis. Each locomotive is shown in a museum-style exhibition hall, with many of the displays including various conductors and trainmen frozen in time while performing their duties on board. Silver prints, the images measuring 4 1/2x6 inches (11.4x15.2 cm.), and the reverse, mounted verso only to pages, with the opposite page including the locomotive name, production date, and a detailed historical caption. 4to, brown wrappers with a block-lettered title in ink; lightly soiled; split-pin binding. 1930s
