Additional Details

The July 1699 issue reports on Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville's successful location of the mouth of the Mississippi River and his establishment of Fort Maurepas in what is now Mississippi (page 269), the first settlement in the French colony of Louisiana. The August 1700 letter includes a translation of a letter from France describing English and Spanish designs on the new colony: "Our settlement at the Mouth of the Mississippi will cost us more Pains and Trouble before it is brought to perfection." An Englishman was captured attempting to trade with the local Indians and sent to Quebec for return to England (page 291). The October 1700 issue reports on the (false) rumors of d'Iberville's death, and describes the Louisiana interior and Mississippi Delta at length, including accounts of human sacrifice among the local Indians (pages 370-371).
