Additional Details

An interesting book, with descriptions of Louisiana and Missouri, and observations on scurvy, yellow fever, dysentery, and pneumonia encountered while serving in the Army of the United States. Coxe was an important early American medical figure who was trained by his grandfather Dr. Joshua Redman and Dr. Benjamin Rush. Among the first Americans to advocate vaccination, Coxe served as a physician at the esteemed Pennsylvania Hospital and later as the chair of materia medica at the University of Pennsylvania. His vast medical library was auctioned at the time of his death in 1864.<
