With a Typed Letter Signed by MacLeish to Yale classmate Ranald H. Macdonald: "I share your feeling about Hemingway: I, too, thought he was very fond of Ms. Stein and owed her a great deal, but the same thing goes for Fitzgerald and Ford Madox Ford. Somehow it isn't like him. He could be nasty face to face but almost never gossiped." At the bottom of the letter is a note by MacLeish stating that he had a friend of his ask Mary Hemingway what the Stein scene on pages 117-18 meant and her reply was that it was caused by Miss Toklas's jealousy of Mr. Hemingway.
