number 5 of only 5 roman numbered copies on japan from a total edition of 230. This copy contains 16 hors texte etchings and a scarce proof sheet containing 6 studies ("planche d'essai"), though it does not contain Maillol's signature or monogram. Maillol completed these drawings in 1927 and it is the only book he provided with etchings. Besides these, he created only a dozen other etchings. While the cover prints the date 1939 and the title 1938, the book was only circulated in 1940, with the last pages being printed in May 1940 under the direction of Lucien Vollard and Martin Fabiani.
