Additional Details

This album was kept by Fabius Maximus Ray or Rhea, Bowdoin Class of 1861. 15 of the photographs have signatures and inscriptions below; some of the others have much later pencil notes naming the sitters as members of the classes of 1861 through 1864. Several are named as Civil War officers, including Captain Daniel M. Phillips, Class of 1863, who died at the Battle of Fisher's Hill in 1864. Howard L. Prince and James H. Maxwell both served in the 20th Maine Infantry, of Little Round Top fame at Gettysburg. Charles Albert Curtis, Class of 1861, is represented with a photo; he went on to a long military career and his Civil War memoirs have been published. 21 of the photographs appear to be Bowdoin students, while 5 near the end are unnamed women, a young boy, and an older bearded man who appears to be Fabius Ray later in life. With--the published alumni report, "The Class of 1861, Bowdoin College." Boston, 1897.
