The Aroostook War was a dispute over the border between Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Though militias were called out on both sides, no shots were fired before the incident was settled by treaty. Includes: Thompson. State of Maine General Order No. 39. Printed circular letter directing militia general Isaac Hodsdon to Aroostook 'for the purpose of protecting the public property' and thanking the militia 'for the protection of the rights and honor of Maine . . . at a season unusual for military operations.' Augusta, ME, 30 March 1839 Hodsdon. Printed broadside circular letter to 'Fellow soldier,' eloquently praising all discharged militia members for their service to Maine, 'to wipe from its escutcheon the foul stains which a protracted diplomacy of more than fifty-five years has rendered almost indelible.' Bangor, ME, 20 April 1839 Partly printed discharge certificate issued to Private Samuel Watts of Bucksport, ME for his two months of service under General Hodsdon, signed by his captain James Huxford.
