In discussing South African apartheid, the original text reads: "America preaches freedom and practices slavery . . . Verwood (a South African leader) is an honest white man." Malcolm adds "he at least practices and preaches the same thing." Alex Haley interviewed Malcolm X for Playboy Magazine in 1963. Prior to going to press, Haley sent a copy of the manuscript to Malcolm for his review. This was to become standard practice for Haley during the writing of the Autobiography.
