Beautiful hand-calligraphed and -illustrated gift book of prose and poetry created for a mid 19th-Century Pennsylvania woman named Caroline A. Smith, presented by her fiancée, Thomas Loyd [sic] Bailey. Containing 69 hand-copied poems by Longfellow, Bryant, Lowell, Percival, Gould, Wordsworth, and numerous other well- and lesser-known writers, each with elaborate geometric borders, floral embellishments, titles and initials in variously colored inks. Enriched with printed and hand-colored lithographed plates of Niagara Falls, Monaco, Laurel-Hill Cemetery, and Sette's roses, among other images. [7], 169, [2] pages. a beautiful, highly decorated manuscript gift book of american poetry. From what we could ascertain, the recipient, Caroline A. Smith, was a young woman from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The book's dedication "CAS from TLB / 3rd month 2nd 1853" indicates in manner that the giver was a local Quaker, Thomas Loyd Bailey, whom she married the following year on November 9th in a Quaker service in Abington, PA. In addition to the illustrated pages, it contains a painstakingly detailed frontispiece, title-page, table of contents, and a second dedication leaf stating "This Little Volume composed entirely of selections from the writing of Our Native Bards is most respectfully dedicated to Caroline A. Smith by The Compiler 1853."
