Finely detailed mid-nineteenth century English map of Armenia entirely drawn by a skilled hand. The primary topographic features include Lake Sevan (called Goukcha Lake), Mount Aragats (Mt. of Ali Guz), and the twin volcanic peaks of Mount Ararat (Great Arrarat and Little Arrarat), while the whole of the plan presents a tangible feel for the physical terrain of the Armenian Highland and the Lesser Caucasus ranges; at the eastern edge, the map terminates with the junction of the Aras and Kura rivers. Two scales of Geographical and English miles are at the lower right corner along with a key representing "General Line of the Russian Frontier", "The Ancient Boundary Line between Turkey and Russia", and "The Present Frontier Line between Persia and Russia". The map has been significantly annotated throughout by a different, but likely contemporary, hand. Though unsigned it is a stunning composition by an expert nineteenth-century draughtsman of a region experiencing great political transformation at that time.
