(MANUSCRIPT MAP--HORATIO NELSON.) Blockade of Cadiz. Small manuscript pen-and-ink map of the blockade of Cadiz. 230x190 mm sheet of laid paper watermarked: "D & C Blauw" with a fragmentary fleur-de-lis; old folds, verso with remnants of red wax seal. [Possibly Cadiz, 1791?]

Additional Details

The map is accompanied by an early pen-and-ink note that alleges a rather fantastic provenance:

"This plan of the blockade of Cadiz was drawn by Nelson a very short time before he lost his arm / probably about the 6th or 7th of July 1797. He lost his arm on the 24th.

It original [sic] came from the hands of the celebrated Lady Emma Hamilton whose name was frequently mentioned in conjunction with Nelson's about this time."

Irrespective of the veracity of this claim, the map bears many halmarks of being contemporary with the blockade, or at least the war.
