Attractive bold colors by county, including several that were established in 1823. A scattering of what appears to be a feather motif is found in the eastern part of the state, perhaps symbolizing the Oneida and Mohawk tribes; or perhaps something altogether different, a hint at topography. A handful of town names and the course of the Erie Canal across the state have been added by a later (but still early) hand.
