"RUNAWAY FROM HIS FORMER MASTER, GOOD AND FAITHFUL WITH ME" (MANUSCRIPT SLAVE DOCUMENTS.) Two documents. Negroes on the Constana [?] Plantation. Two pages, 4to; a list of 34 slaves, their names and ages, with comments on their "character" to the right of each name. [together with] a single sheet of lined 4to paper with a rating of the "cultivating crop, gathering crop and behavior" of 49 different slaves; essentially a "tasking" document. A tiny blind-stamp to the stationery of the latter document bears an American eagle, with the words "Hubbards Norwich." Np, circa 1840s-1850s

Additional Details

Uncommon tasking documents with comments on the character of each slave, some rather interesting: "Isaac [no age given]. Runaway from his former master. Good & faithful with me." "Little Esther. 19. Very superior hand, very ambitious and passionate." "Nancy Black 24. Good field hand, house servant, washes, irons &." The second document, from the same source, though listing different slaves, rates them by their "cultivating crop, gathering crop, and behavior." Apparently based on a 100% scale; some scoring 70, 70 and 70, while others performing at 10, 10, and 20.
