Additional Details

The spinning wheel as an object and a practice is inextricably tied to Mahatma Gandhi, who used the notion of creating homespun cloth as a means of resistance to British rule. This image was first published in Life magazine after Gandhi's assassination, when it became indelibly linked to the nonviolent resistance movement.
