(MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE) (1904-1971) Gandhi and the Spinning Wheel. Silver wire service print, the image measuring 7x8 5/8 inches (17.8x21.9 cm.), the sheet 7 1/8x10 inches (18.1x25.4 cm.), with the wire photo caption in the negative, and Bourke-White's credit and other notations, in red pencil, and two date stamps, on verso. 1946; printed 1971
The spinning wheel as an object and a practice is inextricably tied to Mahatma Gandhi, who used the notion of creating homespun cloth as a means of resistance to British rule. This image was first published in Life magazine after Gandhi's assassination, when it became indelibly linked to the nonviolent resistance movement.
