Sir Thomas Lipton, who made his fortune in the tea business, was an avid yachtsman. The "Shamrock," his first yacht, was designed by the Scotsman William Fife, who was considered the best classic sailboat designer of the time. Though a quick vessel, it lost the the 1899 Americas Cup races in spite of its beautiful lines.<
